About Me

Hello! My name is DJ Hesterman, short for David Junior.  I grew up in Salt Lake City, and have loved it so much I'm still here.  I consider myself lucky to live next door to the Rocky Mountains, home of the greatest snow on earth.  While I adore the city, the people, and the scenery, I am not naive enough to think that Salt Lake is the only place to find such beauty.  For this reason, I love to travel.

My biggest passion, however, has to be music.  I'm pretty sure there are videos of me trying to sing before I could talk.  When I was eight years old, my mother brought home a cello and signed me up for lessons.  I was not happy about the idea of playing an instrument, but didn't have much of a choice.  16 years later, I no longer have anyone forcing me to lug around a "big violin."  Now I do it because I want to.

Funny enough, my passion for music has led me to travel.  Most of the countries I have been were because of tours I went on with an orchestra.  I had the opportunity to get a little taste of Germany, England, France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria.  I have also been to Mexico and Japan. Seeing these different cultures has helped me to realize that people can be happy anywhere, and that there is no real right or wrong way to live.

Learning about other countries and cultures is fascinating.  I think it is important for people to stay true to their roots.  I have a fear that one day I will wake up and the whole world will be one big America.  While I love America, I also love the fact that there are so many places to explore.  People can gain a lot of understanding from experience with others around the world.

I know I'm not alone in my love for travel, so I think it's important for people, including myself, to understand how tourists can make an impact for good and for bad, which leads me to this blog.  Tourism has a great effect on economy, wildlife, nature, and more.  If this writing can help one person to be more aware of their impact beyond their tour, even if that one person is me, I think it will be worth it.  I look forward to learning and sharing my what I learn with others through this blog.
